Starting solids the second time around isn’t nearly as exciting as the first. Because I’ve had to feed this poor child formula, and I think of food and food preparation as love, I feel as though some extra effort should be made as we introduce Oliver to the wonderful world of mothers home cooking. While I believe in the theory of baby lead weaning, he isn’t quite there in terms of feeding himself and I would like to see him consuming more than a few bites. More whole foods, less formula. So once again I am perusing my baby food cookbook and thinking about yummy food combinations.

Potato and leek, one of my favorites as a soup. When sauteed in butter those leeks soften and mellow perfectly complimenting creamy mild potatoes. This went over quite well for lunch today.

Pear and prune. Natures candy for keeping the trains running on time. Another big hit!

Carrots, brown rice, lentils, and I threw a small onion in there for flavor, all sauteed in butter and simmered in a small amount of water. Sounds good, sounds healthy. This went over like, well… a gag and a hurl of sour formula! Yuck! It was a little chunky and textured, maybe not smooth enough. Thanks but no thanks mother. Back to the chopping board tomorrow.

I have been working on one single post for the last few weeks now and making little headway. It seems as though I am taking the wrong approach. Finding MY time these days amongst the very different needs of two small children is fleeting at best, and really, I’d rather be knitting. I do enjoy this whole blogging deal, sharing little snippets of our life with who knows who, but I really do lack the confidence I feel is needed for epically written posts. Short and sweet from here on in, unless I feel the need to regurgitate a big thought.

This past year (and a bit) has been completely manic and not at all what I expected becoming a mother for the second time would be. It continues to be a total coaster ride with me flailing emotions and wondering what the hell I’m doing. But where are we? Frances (or Alice the Cat as she now calls herself) just turned 3!

…and Oliver is a cheeky little monkey. A sweet jovial little fellow who is starting to enjoy some meat and veggies.

We really do have a good time together and I’m so glad they’re here!
